What Are the Best Supplements for Mental Health Issues?
We talk a lot here about health supplements for all kinds of physical disorders and diseases, but some of you may be asking, what about mental health? Are there natural supplements for mental health disorders, phobias, and complexes? It’s something we wanted to address, with a Harvard University study claiming 4 out of 10 Americans (and likely a comparable percentage of people in places around the world) are suffering some kind of mental health issue. So, what are the best supplements for mental health issues? Are there natural supplements for depression that can help you get off the SSRI meds? We’ll take a look at some of them below and also make the case for our own whole food supplements having positive effects on diseases of the brain and psychology.
Why You Want Natural Supplements for Mental Health Issues
Americans have been relying on Big Pharma for far too long to “cure” them of mental disorders like depression, socialized anxiety, and bouts of psychosis or dysphoria. But, millions are waking up to realize they’ve been sold a bogus bill of goods in the form of harmful pharmaceutical drugs (a good sign of mental clarity and sanity!) and are now looking to natural supplements for mental health issues.
it can reasonably be contended that only those who remain on the “chemical lobotomy” of pharmaceuticals are perhaps incurable when it comes to their “madness” or mental health problems (self-poisoning disorder). Waking up and asking, what are the best supplements for mental health issues is a giant step in the right direction towards mental clarity instead of darkness.
They have faced the facts that even the best available medical treatments don’t work for everyone. Seeking other sources of relief, roughly four in ten Americans — and as many as half of those with psychiatric disorders — use herbal supplements and other types of complementary or alternative medicines (CAM) in any given year.
Recognizing how widespread such “alternative” medicines have become, the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Department of Psychiatry convened a one-day conference on the topic. What follows is a quick review of safe — and often effective — natural therapies used for a variety of mental health problems. (Source credit: Harvard Health Publishing)
The Best Supplements for Mental Health Issues
Here, we’ve taken some of the best-recommended natural supplements for mental health (from the Harvard Health Publishing site) and added our own supplements that fight depression and mental illness to the list:
Folic acid is a synthetic form of folate, a B vitamin found in green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, beans, and fortified breads and cereals. It is available as a vitamin supplement or as a prescription medication (leucovorin or L-methylfolate). It has beneficial effects upon depression.
S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe) is a substance made naturally in the body that boosts production of several neurotransmitters involved in regulation of mood.
What it’s for: Depression.
Who may benefit: Used on its own, SAMe works as well as older tricyclic antidepressants. As an add-on treatment, it can boost the effectiveness of a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) or venlafaxine (Effexor) — if you are still on the Big Pharma train and are looking to wean yourself off of it.
This herbal supplement for mental health is derived from leaves of the ginkgo tree.
What it’s for: Natural treatment for Alzheimer’s disease and antidepressant-related sexual problems.
Who may benefit: Taken alone, ginkgo biloba is modestly effective at slowing cognitive decline in people with Alzheimer’s disease — similar in impact to taking a cholinesterase inhibitor such as donepezil (Aricept), but better tolerated.
Valerian is an excellent natural supplement for mental health. It is an herb derived form the root of a pink flower, Valeriana officinalis (pictured above).
What it’s for: Anxiety and sleep problems.
Who may benefit: Valerian may be an option for elderly people, as it does not cause as many memory and thinking problems as benzodiazepines (sedative medications) do. It may also help children who have problems falling asleep. It may reduce anxiety and improve sleep in children with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
St. John’s wort
This herbal supplement is produced from an extract of the plant Hypericum perforatum, and works primarily at easing the effects of depression. It is one of the most popular and best supplements for mental health issues.
Who may benefit: Used on its own, St. John’s wort may help people with mild or moderate symptoms of depression, but is unlikely to help those with severe symptoms. St. John’s wort may also be an alternative to medication for children and adolescents.
Further “Mental Health Supplements” We Endorse and Sell Directly
Chinese herbals and medicinal mushrooms like Chaga, Red Reishi, Turkey Tail, Lion’s Mane, and Cordyceps sinensis are very popular natural supplements for mental health as well as the physical issues like energy boosting and aiding immune system response. We sell them all, and at ultra-low prices. The Chinese have been taking medicinal mushrooms for millennia as natural herbs for anxiety and depression.
High ORMUS Minerals
We strongly believe in the efficacy of High ORMUS mineral-rich substances like Himalayan shilajit, which we sell in several forms: kosher powder, paste/resin, Ayurvedic blend in gel caps, and kosher bulk powder. Why are the high ORMUS minerals so conducive to both physical and mental health (besides that you can’t have one without the other, generally)? It takes a bit of getting into the biophysics of monatomic elements (think white gold powder’s high atomic spin velocity) and “rock powder” such as Himalayan shilajit (also called moomiyo or mumijo), but trust us — this stuff is hugely effective at calming the effects of anxiety, panic disorder, and depression, and energizing and revitalizing cellular productivity at the same time!
Raw Milk Kefir Probiotics
This is the one we have the biggest “Uh…Duh!” moments with. Particularly because our modern culture has almost completely forgotten that for many millennia, mankind, through animal husbandry in the Paleolithic and Bronze Age and beyond the Dark Ages into the 20th Century made raw milk a staple of its diet in many parts of the world. The “land of milk and honey” and all the talk of livestock in the Bible and other texts points to products like raw milk kefir and yogurt being extremely beneficial to human health. “But I’m lactose intolerant…” or “But I heard bad things about raw milk…” go the cries of the innocent brainwashed masses.
It’s really quite simple: those who know the health benefits of raw milk kefir like our clients who buy our Super Immune Activator know it to be one of the best supplements for mental health issues as well as the physical. But, it really works on all levels to balance out the human biology — especially in an age where the “natural cures” and natural body functions like breastfeeding are being increasingly tabooed. Well, who do you think is doing the brainwashing and tabooing? Most of you can guess, but if you need a hint it’s the ones who stand to lose the most by having you healthy and not coming into their medical offices for pill-handing-out time, a la One Flew Over the Cukoo’s Nest. So, who are the real crazies…?
